Hadith is the second most important primary source of Islamic law. During every phase of Muslim history efforts have been put forth to communicate Hadith and keep it intact. Earlier experts of Hadiths comprehension and Ilm Jarh wa Ta‘dil not only set principles to verify the authenticity and reliability of Hadith but also discussed and formulated principles to grasp the meaning of the text of Hadith. This article primarily deals with the principles of comprehension of Hadith of Syed Abul Maududi. Abul Aala Maududi, founder of Jamat-e-Islami and author of Quranic Tafseer “Tarjamanul Qur’an” and many other discourses on various topics of Islam. He is among those who used Hadith narrations extensively in his illustrious interpretation of Qur’an.
For him the verification of Hadith narrators and text is necessary in order to benefit from it. He was of the view that there might be chances of human error, forgetfulness, personal beliefs or misunderstanding of narrators present in the sanad. Moreover, for him, it is also important to confirm, if the possible meanings of the text of Hadith have clash with the meaning of any other Hadith. In that case law would not be extracted from it even if all the narrators conform to the standards formulated by Hadith experts. Few examples of principles of comprehension of Hadith of Maulana Maududi have also been cited in the article to describe the principles of comprehension of Hadith. These examples include the narrations on the welcoming of Imam Mahdi, the coming of Dajjal (the false Messaih) and prophecies of Prophet Muhammad SW.
