Our society is currently surrounded by numerous social evils, which are gradually consuming it like termites. One of these evils is gambling, the addiction to which has trapped many people in its web, leading to their financial, social, and moral ruin. In the world of trade and financial transactions, gambling has become a significant issue that affects not only economic matters but also social and ethical aspects. Therefore, it has become essential to examine this issue from the perspective of Islamic law and to protect society from such harmful practices.
Islam has declared gambling to be impermissible. However, the complexities of the modern era and the emergence of various new forms of trade and financial transactions have made this subject increasingly complex. Today, gambling and speculative practices are increasingly found in activities such as speculative trading in the stock market, forex and currency trading, derivatives and futures contracts, options trading, and speculative activities involving cryptocurrencies. The growing popularity of these activities has raised important questions regarding whether such practices are consistent with Islamic principles and rulings.
This study provides a detailed examination of various contemporary forms of gambling in trade, including speculative buying and selling in the stock market, margin trading and short selling, forex trading, derivatives and futures markets, options and interest-based or Shariah-questionable financial contracts, and speculative investment practices involving cryptocurrencies. These activities are analyzed in the light of Shariah principles, with an effort to determine their respective Islamic legal rulings and to assess whether and to what extent they fall within the prohibition of gambling (qimār).
