Abstract

A Critical Evaluation of the Intellectual Thought of Maulana Shibli Nomani (ʿIlm al-Kalām)

Maulana Shibli Nomani (1857–1914) occupies a distinguished position among the Muslim intellectuals of the Indian subcontinent due to his significant contributions to Islamic scholarship, history, literature, and rel igious thought. At a time when Muslim societies were confronted with the challenges of colonialism, Western rationalism, modern science, and Christian missionary critiques, Shibli sought to present Islam in a manner that was both intellectually convincing and faithful to its foundational sources. His intellectual engagement with theological issues reflects an important attempt to revive and reform ʿIlm al-Kalām in response to the changing socio-religious realities of the modern age. This study critically examines the intellectual thought of Maulana Shibli Nomani with particular reference to his contributions to ʿIlm al-Kalām. It explores his methodological approach to theological discourse, his understanding of the relationship between reason and revelation, and his response to contemporary intellectual challenges. The study also investigates how Shibli employed historical analysis, rational argumentation, and classical Islamic scholarship to defend Islamic beliefs and address modern doubts regarding faith, prophethood, revelation, and Islamic civilization.

Using an analytical and critical research methodology, the paper evaluates Shibli’s major writings and assesses the strengths and limitations of his theological perspectives. Particular attention is given to his efforts to reconcile traditional Islamic teachings with modern intellectual developments while maintaining the authenticity of Islamic doctrine. The study argues that Shibli’s contribution represents a transitional phase in the evolution of modern Islamic thought, bridging the gap between classical kalām traditions and contemporary theological concerns.

The findings suggest that Shibli Nomani played a pivotal role in revitalizing theological discourse in South Asia by promoting a balanced approach that combined rational inquiry with religious commitment. His intellectual legacy continues to offer valuable insights for addressing modern theological questions and contributes significantly to contemporary discussions on the relevance and renewal of ʿIlm al-Kalām in the Muslim world.
