Abstract

The Holy Qur’an at a few places, such as verse 62 of Surat al-Baqarah and verse 69 of Surat Al-i-‘Imran, while addressing the Jews asks them to have belief in Allah and the Day of Judgment. These verses do not mention belief in the prophethood of Muhammad (Allah’s blessings and peace be on him). Does this mean that for the purpose of success in the Hereafter, it was not required of the Jews to have belief in the Prophethood of Muhammad (Allah’s blessings and peace be on him)? When the Holy Qur’an says that testifies to the truth of the earlier scriptures, does this mean that the earlier scriptures are still authentic and that they remain uncorrupted? Did the Holy Qur’an attribute disbelief to the Jews, particularly to those among them who professed belief in the Israelite Prophets only and held that Muhammad (Allah’s blessings and peace be on him) was a Prophet to the Arabs? This paper tries to answer these questions in the light of the famous Qur’anic exegete of the twentieth century Mawlana Amin Ahsan Islahi (d. 1997) and tries to find support for his views in the rich tafsir tradition of more than a thousand years.
