Abstract

Dr Fazlur Rahman, a learned Pakistani Islamic scholar is known for his modernist approaches towards the interpretation of Qur’an , Sunnah and subsequently ijtihad. This article is an insight into his thought on the idea of conducting Ijtihad and other related concepts. He asserts the interpretation of Quran should be done holistically while keeping in mind the contextual issues and problems. This process of interpreting according to context is for him is the Ijtihadi movement. For him, Ijtihad is an effective exercise which revolutionizes the society in accordance to Quranic teachings and Sunnah. He also does not accept the notion of closing of the doors of Ijtihad.
